  • Shared Streets – Jay Decker, DOTI Transportation Innovation Manager
A few months ago, we got an early discussion on the direction for Shared Streets at our committee. Since then, as Jay shared, the City has launched a new effort to develop the future Shared Streets Program, starting with assessing the success of the temporary shared streets, then developing a set of design guidelines, and determining where Shared Streets could be implemented across the City. We’ll hear about the feedback from the first virtual citywide public meeting and progress towards the Winter 2023 goal to develop draft recommendations.
  • Outdoor Places – Jay Decker, DOTI Transportation Innovation Manager & Brad Johnson, CPD Principal City Planner
During the pandemic, the city was a laboratory for more flexibility in creating outdoor spaces for commercial activity. “Activated” spaces below the curb (in the street), above the curb, and on private property — or a mix of locations — were tried in a way that went beyond the restrictions of Denver’s old “Tables, Chairs and Railings” program. A joint project with CPD and DOTI is working to take what we all learned and develop new regulations to make such outdoor spaces for dining (and more) possible going forward, while ensuring accessibility for all. We’re hearing about this effort at the start, with the first public survey sent out last month and the first stakeholder working group this month.
  • Transportation Advocacy 2022 Review & 2023 Looking Forward – Molly McKinley, Policy Manager and Sam McCrory, Open Streets Program Manager for Denver Streets Partnership
The Denver Streets Partnership, a coalition of transportation-interested groups in Denver, had a big 2022 — including getting voter approval for Denver Deserves Sidewalks, but also much more. We’ll get a briefing from Molly and Sam on the coalition’s achievements in 2022 as well as what’s coming up in 2023 and how to get involved.
  • Petition to Pause I-25/Broadway Interchange Project – Amy Kenreich, West Wash Park Neighborhood Association President & Brittany Spinner, Lincoln Street Community RNO VP
Two RNOs have asked to present their petition to DOTI that asks to pause the I-25/Broadway Interchange Project in order to develop options that better meet the goals of the project’s environmental assessment. They highlight two areas for reconsideration: Maintaining access to and from area neighborhoods while providing multi-modal travel options including fully integrated and useful bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and reconsidering the rebuild of the I-25 northbound ramp that wraps around the 800 block of S. Lincoln so as not to displace these neighbors. WWPNA’s web site has information on the project and a link to their petition: https://www.wwpna.org/i-25
  • Let’s Ensure Snow Clearance on Routes to Schools – Bryan Wilson
Bryan Wilson asked for a few minutes to share an effort he’s starting up in Congress Park, putting together a few volunteers to make sure that the crosswalks & alley crossings are clear of snow & ice along routes between schools and key destinations like bus stops so that people can access the bus stops as well as walk their children to school. He’s looking for advice from others who have been involved in similar efforts (like Snow Angels) and perhaps insights from Safe Routes to School as he looks to pull together volunteers and inspire other neighborhoods to do the same. (Note: see Bryan’s dedication in action in this 9News piece)
