The Denver Board of Ethics, established by Denver ordinance and the City Charter, is an independent five-person board governed by the City Charter, the Denver Code of Ethics and its own Rules of Procedure. The mission of the Board of Ethics is to encourage and guide city officers, officials and employees to adhere to high levels of ethical conduct so that the public will have confidence that persons in positions of public responsibility are acting for the benefit of the public.
The Board of Ethics normally meets once per month (currently at 8:00am for approximately two hours on the third Wednesday of each month in the Wellington Webb Municipal Office Building at 201 West Colfax Avenue, Denver.) Each Board member must be willing to dedicate him/herself and the necessary professional time to:
-
Reviewing written case materials before each meeting;
-
Giving official advisory opinions to city employees, elected officers and board and commission members about ethical issues that arise and are presented to the Board;
-
Reviewing, investigating and, if necessary, conducting hearings on complaints alleging violations of the Code of Ethics; and
-
Providing guidance to the executive director of the Board of Ethics on issues pertaining to the operation of the Board, the Code of Ethics and the promotion of ethics education and training to city employees and officials.
