November From the Veeps Cubical
November 2015 has been a landmark month for my own Overland Park Neighborhood Association. Rotating teams of neighbors led by our Directing artist, Michele Brown and our RNO President and team co-ordinator, Mara Owen worked long hours to complete phase one of the Evans Bridge Beautification project, EBB. (You may not know that Overland Park was divided into four quadrants by the Evans Overpass, which lost us over one hundred dwellings and created walking difficulties within the neighborhood). It has been our aim for some time to stitch ourselves back together with art and logical transportation, such as walking routes. The addition of the Evans Light Rail Station has lent impetus to our neighborhood’s rebuilding efforts and sense of direction. The creation of the Levitt Pavilion in Ruby Hill Park makes the Evans bridge a natural conduit for walkers between it’s concerts and the station. Our City Councilman, Jolon Clark, has worked to get state-of-the-art traffic signage at the top of the overpass, which is being installed now.
After OPNA’s planning committee achieved the grant approval, hired Mrs. Brown and lent her our artistic input, volunteers from within our neighborhood boundaries and without, came together to wire-brush, sweep, apply primer coats and then paint within the numbers. Michele relined and refined until dismal grey cement sidewalls became accomplished works of bright designs with artistic merit. We finalized the last 16 foot section with two coats of protective sealant on Nov. 24th.
To name a few of the most dedicated neighbors; Paul Bodor who not only worked tirelessly to get us the Arts and Venues grant money, but then along with his wife Terry Pasqua, spent probably more hours on the EBB physical work than any other neighbors except Tracy Hardiman (our tireless Treasurer), assisting and accompanying the artist herself, than the rest of us combined. I also give kudos to Jack Unruh, Ronnie Crawford, Judy Greek, Mara’s husband Andrew Gerhauf, Jim Sample, Michele’s husband Billy and so many others who came to spend hours of their free time from all over Denver.
Jolon and his kids also painted with us, as did his aide, Maggie Thompson.
Special Thanks to J.C. Holmsteader, proprietor of EMW furniture for providing us a space to store paints, drop cloths and materials on a daily basis.
