INC Delegate Meeting Minutes
Saturday, April 11th, 2015
9:00 a.m., University Park United Methodist Church,1280 South University Boulevard, Denver, CO 80210, USA
This was a combination meeting / election forum for Dist 6 (Paul Kashman (PK) and Liz Adams (LA) and At-Large City Council candidates
- Treasurers report – INC has approx 12k in CODs, 14k in Savings, 2k in Charity acct, 3k in Checking
- Charlie Brown (current city council person for Dist 6) was in attendance
The following is my interpretation of the election forum discussion
- Question 1: Mid Century Modern Homes
- PK – Gather community and research overlay definitions to define best approach
- LA – Also look into a historic preservation district. Communication is key
- Follow Up Question to LA – Use technology to communicate and come to concensious
- Question 2: Police Body Cameras
- PK – Turn them on (There are gaps in use); Create a transparent system; Create a new culture
- Question 3: Suggestions for exploring Dist 6
- LA – Breakfast on S. Gaylord; Rec Center; Bike to the gulch for a round of golf; See DU and talk to students; go to Observatory Park & Cook Park
- PK – Walk the district; See what is happening on Broadway and in Rosedale Harvard Gulch; See as many neighborhoods as possible.
- Question 4: City Payouts (Public Safety)
- PK – Upsetting for many reasons including the spent tax dollars
- LA – The cost is money and the public view of our government and its safety apparatus. Manage / reduce occurrence of these issues
- Follow Up Question: How would you promote Dist 6?
- PK – I have a career spent promoting Dist 6 through the Wash Park Profiler. Use social media & promote the Gaylord corridor
- LA – improve parking and access to businesses
- Question 5: What do you see as “smart” growth for Denver?
- LA – Dist 6 is an area of stability. Let’s keep it that way; Allow historic buildings to create character and find a synergy with the new development
- PK – Maintain our history as we implement Blueprint Denver
- Follow Up question to LA – How do we include neighborhoods in the development process?
- LA – empower the INC ZAP committee; push information to the neighborhoods ASAP.
- Question 6 Lighting round – Sorry I wasn’t able to track all the answers
- Olympics – Yes (Both)
- Liquor in super markets – No (Both)
- Developer restrictions – Yes (Both)
- Question 7: Cross examination questions
- PK -> LA: What committees would you join if you are a city council person
- LA: Planning, Safety, Tech Governance, Infrastructure, and Culture
- LA -> PK: What did you mean when you said Dist 6 is “under siege”?
- PK: Started in the 80s with pop top development; Being central to Denver, development and traffic are a continuous issue and haven’t been improved over the years
- PK -> LA: What committees would you join if you are a city council person
- Question 8: Energy efficiency for commercial buildings
- LA – need to learn more, but has had conversations with Xcel
- PK – This is a fantastic idea; would promote solar & wind., Water conservation needs more consideration.
- Question 9 (last question): What is your input on the I-70 reconstruction?
- PK – Current Plan has not been thought through enough yet. We need a better plan.
- LA – This is a Big issue; CDOT is already done with the plan. This is a funding issue now (the plan incorporates the funding issue). We need to act quickl
- Auditor Intermission (Tim O’Brien & Chris Nevitt were each given the floor) No recording was made
- Tim O’Brien – Former Colorado Auditor
- Very qualified and a very competent leader
- Has no conflicts of Interest.
- Perceives that CN does.
- Says CN will be an incompetent leader
- Has no quid-pro-quo endorsements
- Will be independent
- Will inform and hold accountable the city officials
- Chris Nevitt – City Councilman Dist 7
- having a CPA is not a requirement for the job of auditor
- A neighborhood advocate
- Leadership comes from experience and CN has lots of experience in city government
- Reminder that Tim O’Brien has served for 8 years on the city auditor oversight committee
- Dennis Gallagher (current auditor) changed the model for the Auditors office and CN will continue this new model.
