Hunger Free Colorado to Launch a New Kind of Food Truck

“Your Neighborhood Food Truck” will help connect struggling Denver families to food resources

WHAT:            More than 800,000 Coloradans are at risk of hunger, with at least 25 percent of working families lacking enough food to meet their basic needs. To help connect families to available food and nutrition resources, Hunger Free Colorado, the state’s leading anti-hunger organization, will launch a new kind of food truck. But this truck won’t serve cupcakes, gourmet PB&J sandwiches or street tacos. It will serve up access to computers and personal support to help local residents apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), as well as offer referrals to nearby food pantries and other children and senior nutrition programs. On board, residents can receive one-on-one assistance with available food resources, complete SNAP applications and connect with other partnering agencies.

In addition to the SNAP program the Hunger Free van staff will refer clients for Denver Health services to Enrollment Services (Medicare, Medicaid, CICP),   Women’s Infant and Children’s WIC, and clinic.  This is a great partnership with great potential for DH and the Hunger Free program. Many of our patients reply on both programs so here are all of these services in one stop. In July the SNAP Cards will be issued directly out of the van this is unprecedented in Colorado.
