COVID-19 is a current crisis that demands our immediate attention. It has put millions out of work and caused over 100,000 deaths in the United States alone.  During the Great Depression, FDR created a plan to put Americans to work and that plan was the New Deal.

Neighborhoods that have fought decades of toxic air pollution, the majority of which are lower-income, black, and Latinx, experience higher rates of heart disease, lung conditions, and many other health ailments.  Poor air quality has been contributing to a health crisis for years and it is not getting better.  The World Health Organization estimates that as many as 7 million people per year prematurely die from air pollution.

Air pollution can cause serious health impacts. Industrial workers, low-income families, and people of color are especially at risk. Now, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the public health issues caused by toxic air pollution are putting vulnerable communities at even higher risk of infection, complications, and fatality. As a recent Harvard study has confirmed, the connection between toxic air pollution and increased complications, including mortality rates, from COVID-19 complications is clear.  Part of the response to this pandemic must be addressing the ongoing dangers of pollution.  Now more than ever, public health matters, science matters, leadership matters, and community matters.

This is not acceptable. We are demanding that our elected officials act immediately to end this destructive behavior and implement a JUST Transition for American workers, so we can all breathe easier and preserve the planet for our children. The transition to a clean energy economy is an opportunity for our country to take a global leadership role in fighting climate change, while creating millions of good jobs, and strengthening those communities facing the worst effects of the climate crisis in the process.
