INC Transportation Committee Meeting: Thurs., May 11 6-8pm via Zoom

May 11, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation Transportation Committee will meet via Zoom on Thursday, May 11th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Everyone is welcome! We discuss a range of transportation, transit, and streets topics, build connections with the agencies and organizations involved, and ensure that neighborhood input is included in plans at all levels! Attendees do not need to be INC delegates. You are welcome to participate even if your neighborhood organization is not a member of INC, or you are not active in a neighborhood group. Please pass on this invitation to anyone who might be interested in joining the committee — they can use this form to be added to our growing e-mail list!

It’s a big meeting this month! I hope you can join us by Zoom!

  • Hot off the legislative session, we’ll hear about the efforts to get the state legislature to pass — and the Governor to sign — measures to allow effective and equitable use of speed cameras, to provide tax credits for the purchase of e-bikes, and more.
  • We’ll welcome two new RTD Directors representing the Denver area and hear about the challenges and opportunities they see as they represent us overseeing our regional transit service.
  • In what will likely be the next BRT corridor to receive significant capital funding, Federal Boulevard’s planning is entering a new phase led by CDOT and we’ll hear about it early, and get to know CDOT’s BRT Program Manager
  • As voters, we have approved a range of transportation projects funded by bonds. Now, six years into the ten-year Elevate Denver GO Bond program, what’s done, what’s next, and what’s at risk with inflation and the time limits inherent to the funding? We have Denver’s go-to expert joining us.

See below for the full agenda and please pass this along to folks in your circles who are interested in transportation topics.

See you Thursday!

— Joel

  • State Legislative Update – Pete Piccolo, Executive Director, Bicycle Colorado
Each session there are several pieces of legislation that can affect the safety of the streets in Denver and around Colorado, and can help more people choose healthier modes for more of their trips. Pete Piccolo will join us for an overview of key transportation legislation in the session that wrapped up on May 6th.
  • Introducing RTD Directors JoyAnn Ruscha and Michael Guzman
In November, voters elected two new Denver-area members of the RTD Board of Directors, and we’re grateful that they can join us this month. Director JoyAnn Ruscha represents RTD District B which includes much of Northeast Denver, and Director Michael Guzman represents RTD District C which includes central, North, Northwest and West Denver. We’ll hear from each of them about what they’ve learned in their first few months in these roles, and RTD’s challenges and opportunities as they see them.
  • Bus Rapid Transit on Federal Boulevard – Ryan Noles, CDOT BRT Program Manager & My La, Denver DOTI Senior City Planner
Denver Moves Transit identifies major corridors throughout Denver where the street design and operations should be improved to support frequent, reliable transit service. One of the major “high capacity” corridors identified is Federal Boulevard, which is identified for the highest category of investment for Full BRT, targeting very frequent service along the majority of its length in Denver. CDOT is leading the detailed planning for BRT on Federal — a CDOT roadway — and will be launching a detailed planning effort this summer in partnership with Denver and neighboring jurisdictions. We’ll hear about the scope and goals from Ryan Noles, CDOT’s BRT Program Manager, along with My La from Denver DOTI.
  • Denver General Obligation (GO) Bond Transportation Projects Status — Kiki Turner, Denver Elevate & RISE GO Bonds Communications Lead
In 2017, voters approved the 10-year Elevate Denver General Obligation Bond program, a nearly billion dollar investment into the city’s infrastructure, including over $430M for transportation and mobility projects. In response to the COIVD-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic hardships, the City took to the voters again in 2021, where they approved additional investments through the RISE Denver (Rebuilding for an Inclusive and Sustainable Economy) GO bond program, including over $61M for transportation and mobility. As the Elevate Denver program nears its end, Kiki Turner will share the status of these projects and the steps the City is taking to deliver on its promise to voters and mitigate financial risks in an environment that continues to recover from inflation and escalation.
