Summer of Safety for Denver Youth

This morning at his Park Hill Community Office, State Senator Mike Johnston and local non-profit the Youth Connection officially launched their “Summer of Safety” event series for Denver’s youth. The “Summer of Safety” provides healthy, safe, and exciting activities for young people in the Denver community over the next four weeks.
Youth from the community worked with local non-profit organization The Youth Connection (TYC) to organize these events, which will take place in and around the Park Hill neighborhood in Northeast Denver. “When we feel torn apart by violence, we must come together to love back. Summer is a critical time when we can make a difference for all youth and these events are a great start,” said Senator Johnston.
The “Summer of Safety” will kick off with a graffiti class , August 1, led by local artist Patrick “Girr” McGirr, where teens will be able to show off their talent on a large mural that will hang in Sen. Johnston’s community office.
On August 8, Manual High School will host a flag football tournament on their campus beginning at 2pm, and the final event will be a poetry slam/open mic night at Civic Center Park on August 15, open to all youth who want to participate.
Mayor Hancock will kick off the event with remarks at 4pm.
