Executive Committee Meeting Minutes
July 8, 2019 – Daniels Fund Building
Present
Board: George Mayl, Ernie Deitrich, Jane Potts, Hank Bootz, Maggie Price, Steve Nissen, Loretta Koehler, Drew Dutcher
Chairs: Jane Lorimer, Amy Duclos, Greg Sorensen,
Guests: Emmet Hobley, Montbello Neighborhood Improvement Assn.
Call to order: 6:32. Board quorum present.
Minutes
Ernie moved to accept June 10, 2019 EC minutes; second by Maggie. Approved unanimously.
Introduction to Board Candidate
Emmett Hobley, Montbello Neighborhood Improvement Association/MNIA, was appointed by George (President) to be approved as a delegate at large board member replacing Bridget Walsh. Emmett explained his reasons for a desire to be on the INC board and described his credentials and RNO activities. Emmett was excused from the meeting at that point.
Ernie moved to approve the appointment; second by Hank. Board approved unanimously Emmett will be presented to delegation at the August 10 meeting for approval.
Education Committee – Amy
- Denver Classroom Teachers Assn / DCTA announcing endorsement for DPS board candidates on July 10
- A Denver Teachers Coalition will also announce who they plan to endorse
- 5G towers going up in metro area – parents trying to fight based on health impacts on children.
- EC Question: How would you integrate recycle into DPS curriculum?
Denver Decides – Steve
- Denver Decides will be involved in DPS election portion – questions invited. INC will ask for questions at the August delegate meeting and insert blurbs to social media and website.
- One ballot issue will include validation of a new Department of Transportation
- Debate to be held at October delegate meeting
Newsletter and Website
- Maggie appreciates our sending articles for newsletter and website insertions. Jane L. supports article creations and insertions. Board suggested looking into getting a newsletter editor and establishing a central clearing house for articles.
- Amy has a person in mind. Would need to be paid.
Parks and Rec/PARCs Committee – Maggie
Park Hill Golf Course will be topic of July 16 meeting. PARCs will bring a new resolution to to delegates in August. SOS has circulated a petition designed to keep the PHGC easement for open space/park lands. Idea is to generate a ground swell. INC passed three resolutions to have a park there.
ACTION – PARCs will approve resolution and bring to board by e-vote prior to putting before delegates. Maggie will pass along the SOS petition to EC and post on our website.
Sustainability Committee- Ernie
- Last couple of meetings had sparse attendance. Last meeting featured a speaker from Denver Water who addressed water resources and sustainability and advised Water has scenarios in play for whatever happens with nature and water.
- Currently working on committee platform language/content. Held a strategizing session – what does success look like for this committee and that will become basis of the platform and policies.
- Premise is top down: Global, national, state, city and local – What other neighborhoods are doing.
- Considering Taylor Moeller as co-chair
- Resilient Denver – collecting signatures for ballot initiative to require City to establish a sustainability department – pushing that citizens are serious about sustainability.
ACTION Ernie will send copy of Resilient Denver’s recent email to EC
Side Note:
What if we had a purpose for Around the city and we pick the topic. So we’d ask a question about what an RNO is doing for XYZ topic. Outcome: involves attendees, gives INC ideas for direction on various issues being considered.
Annual Awards Dinner- Jane P.
- Signed agreement with Doubletree (former Holiday Inn).
- Committee meets in August.
- There are materials ready re soliciting auction items.
INC Small Grant Program- Hank
Have three grant apps that have been looked at and approved by this committee.
Groups should plan about three months to get our funding.
Accelerated Neighborhood Climate Association/ANCA- Motion made by Jane P that the $300 grant requested by ANCA be funneled to Sunnyside because our guidelines say only grants can be given to current INC RNO members. Second by Ernie. Motion carried with one abstention (Steve Nissen). See August 12 minutes for change to this motion.
Hank asked for a motion to award grants to University Hills at $300 and Harvard Gulch Rosedale at $300. Maggie moved and Ernie seconded. Carried with one abstention (Jane Potts)
Budget Committee – Greg
- Advised $2500 was allocated to media so we have that open for web/newsletter support.
- Membership at 41%
- Jane Potts advised of three new members: Stapleton United Neighbors – RNO, Jen Dietrich – associate individual, Denver Police Museum – associate organization
Senior Law Day – Jane L
- Jane asked the board to consider becoming a Bronze level sponsor to Senior Law Day to be held July 27 at DPPA. Amount $250. The event target audience is seniors, their families and caregivers. Rationale: Involvement with senior population of Denver and a good cause.
- Ernie moved we participate at the recommended level; second by Drew. Carried unanimously
- Money to come from the Community Building budget line item
- George and Jane L. will represent INC at this event. Others who wish to attend are asked to donate $10 to help defray cost.
Mobile Home Outreach by INC – George
George indicated there are five mobile home parks in Denver. He will investigate locations and report at next EC meeting ideas for reaching residents who live in mobile homes.
Meeting with Mayor – George
- George has asked Grace Ramirez to set up meeting with Mayor Hancock during the last week of August with the goal to reconnect and state a couple of INC agenda items.
- Going to ask mayor start appointing RNO members to citywide committees.
- All EC members invited to attend with George.
August Delegate Meeting
Held at Denver Museum of Nature & Science. We pay for food. Cost is about $500. Program thus far:
- Minutes of the May delegate meeting to be approved
- DMNS will present a 15 minute overview of what’s going on
- Emmett Hobley will be voted upon as new board member
- Inviting the five new City Council members to be introduced to INC members
- Resolution from PARCs presented for a vote
- Representative from Census Bureau to speak about importance of reporting
- Three minute committee reports (except for voting items)
New Business: Good Neighbor Agreements – Ernie
- Are they worth it? Can they be enforced
- INC has a vast library of examples of GNA’s and Loretta has history of how to enforce
- Margie Valdez is also a great resource
New Business: RNO Supporting Food at Delegate Meetings – Steve
In the past, our RNO members paid for food served at delegate meetings. We need to reinstall that practice. Guidelines are online. INC may continue to provide coffee- RNO’s provide food. Falls under the proposed paid position Jane L recommended in June.
