New Shelter At East 48th Avenue
Dear Neighbor:
The City & County of Denver is in the process of purchasing the property at 4330 E 48th Avenue. One of the proposed uses for the building is an overnight shelter for homeless men and women. This shelter would replace an existing shelter in Northeast Denver scheduled to close in the next few months.
We anticipate this new shelter at East 48th Avenue could open in the early portion of 2017. In the short term, it would serve as an overflow facility, accommodating situations when other shelters reach capacity. Clients would receive transportation to and from the shelter between 7 and 10 p.m.; it would not accommodate walk-up clients. Each morning, clients would receive transportation back downtown for meals and other services.
A local nonprofit to be selected by Denver’s Road Home would staff and operate the facility. Based on future needs and ongoing community input, the building could include more regular use and additional services that serve walk-up clients.
We wanted to make you aware of the City’s pending purchase of the building and the intended use and answer any questions you may have. We look forward to ongoing community engagement and will be holding a public meeting closer to the time when the facility opens. In the meantime, we will be meeting with nearby neighborhood organizations to ensure all issues are addressed and to begin planning for a community oversight committee.
For more information, please feel free to contact Denver’s Road Home at 720-944-2508.
Thank you.
