INC Transportation Committee Meeting September 12, 2024
AGENDA
Denver’s Street Safety Revolution: Denver’s Approach to Rapid Vision Zero Progress — Amy Ford, DOTI Executive Director
Since INC’s unanimous adoption of our Transportation Platform, we have been calling for Denver to “commit itself, at the highest levels, to the Vision Zero goals of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries,” noting that “this is a moral issue — life and health are of paramount importance, and transportation systems and features should lessen the impact when inevitable human errors occur. Although many plans and small-scale changes have occurred since then, the rate of road deaths and serious injuries has not yet come down.
Join us to hear from Amy Ford, DOTI’s Executive Director, about the range of interventions and the first implementations recently announced to rapidly address the issue and protect the lives of neighbors across the city. [Note: this topic was rescheduled from our May meeting]
Updating the Denver Moves: Bikes Map — Insight Into Program Goals and Approaches — Taylor Phillips, DOTI Senior City Planner
Denver is updating its Denver Moves: Bikes map, with recent public open houses (recording available here) and the draft map is available for public input. For our meeting, we’re fortunate to spend some time with Taylor Phillips, DOTI’s lead for this update. We’ll hear about the big ideas shaping the updated plan, the changes to how the department is thinking about facility types, and how both the update to the map and other work will help ensure that the City’s commitment to carry through to implementation will be as smooth as possible.
What’s On the Ballot: RTD Edition
We’ll have a short timely topic on the RTD items on this fall’s ballot. What is “De-Brucing” RTD and what impact will this measure’s passage or failure have? How do you find out about who’s running for the RTD Board in your area?
Automated License Plate Readers in Denver, Recent Expansion and Successes — Commander Jacob Herrera, Denver Police Department
Early this year, Denver announced a significant expansion to automated license plate readers, following the rollout of similar technology leading to a reduction in auto thefts at the Denver Airport by 90%. Commander Jacob Herrera will give us an overview of the ways Denver uses automated license plate readers, both long-standing and new, in both fixed and mobile applications, and the types of crimes they are used to address. We’ll also hear about the data privacy protections built in to the program, and how the deployment has taken concerns about disparate impact into account.
