Historic Denver Walking Tours
KUSA – If you drive through the Capitol Hill neighborhood often, you might be familiar with the uniqueness of the area. It’s a mixture of old turn-of-the-century architecture and new modern housing units.
However, how much do you really know about one of Denver’s most coveted neighborhoods? Here are some fun facts about the history of Capitol Hill.
1. Capitol Hill is one of Denver’s oldest neighborhoods.
The beginnings of Capitol Hill date back to 1864 when Colorado local Henry Brown claimed a deserted hill in the middle of town. He thought the location would be a good spot for the state capitol (imagine that).
2. East Colfax used to have homes for the rich and luxurious
The wealthy nicknamed the location “Quality Hill” because of it’s proximity to downtown, and mountain views. Now, it’s a different scene. You can find a range of eclectic restaurants like Voodoo Doughnuts and Queen of Sheeba Ethiopian down Colfax.
3. Denver’s unique architectural style can be seen throughout Capitol Hill.
Researchers believe the style stems from the classical architecture of Europe. The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception is well-known for it’s turn of the century architecture
4. After the crash of the silver industry in 1893 many people left their homes in the mountains for the city life.
They flooded into Capitol Hill, and that sparked the rise of middle class apartment buildings and commercial development on Colfax Ave.
5. The Great Depression put an end to Millionaire’s Row.
This part of history was nationwide, and Denver suffered just like everyone else in the country. Many of the mansions were knocked down for multi-unit buildings.
6. Not all of the mansions are gone…
Today you can find some remnants of the past century. Some have been preserved with the help of historical organizations, and the Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods Inc. If you’re interested in learning more about Capitol Hills “rich history”, you can take a walking tour with the Historic Denver organization.
Historic Denver is a co-sponsor with Denver INC of the Denver Decides election forums.
